Middlebury College – One Night in Tokyo Screening and Presentation
It’s always rewarding to visit a university and talk with students who are thinking about where language and creativity might take them.
Last week, I had the opportunity to visit Middlebury College in Vermont, where I shared some of my journey learning Japanese and how it ultimately inspired me to write and direct two feature films in Japan.
We ended the day by watching One Night in Tokyo together, followed by a great conversation with students. Before taking a group photo, someone suggested that we all do the “Baby Boy” pose from the movie. I’m not sure what I would have thought if someone had shown me this photo while I was writing that scene.
Thank you to everyone at Middlebury for having me, and especially to Motoko Tabuse for the invitation and hospitality. Middlebury has an inspiring language program in which students pledge to speak only the language they are studying. I really admired the commitment and hard work everyone was putting into achieving their goals.
